If going to the dentist gives you anxiety, you're not alone. Many people experience some degree of nervousness or even outright fear when it comes to dental procedures. But, what if there was a way to make those appointments much more comfortable, even relaxing? Well, there is – it's called IV sedation dentistry.
What exactly is IV sedation?
IV sedation uses medications delivered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous line. This type of sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed, almost dream-like state. While you'll still be conscious and able to respond to simple instructions, you'll feel incredibly calm and have minimal awareness of the sights, sounds, and sensations of your dental treatment.
Why would I need IV sedation?
IV sedation is wonderful for patients who experience:
Severe dental anxiety or phobia: If dental visits make you so uneasy that you avoid them altogether, IV sedation can make it possible to get the care you need.
Difficulty getting numb: For some patients, local anesthetics don't completely numb the treatment area. IV sedation can help make them more effective.
Complex or lengthy procedures: If you're getting several dental procedures done at once, or your treatment process will be lengthy, IV sedation can make the experience more comfortable.
Sensitivity to stimuli: IV sedation can help if you have a strong gag reflex, are extremely sensitive to the sounds of dental instruments, or have other sensitivities.
Is IV sedation safe?
When administered by a trained oral surgeon or anesthesiologist, IV sedation is considered very safe. You'll be continuously monitored throughout the procedure (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels). Your anesthesia provider can adjust the medication level as needed and may even have reversal medications available to bring you out of sedation quickly if necessary.
What to expect with IV sedation
Consultation: Before the procedure, your oral surgeon will discuss your medical history and explain the IV sedation process in detail.
The appointment: You'll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment as you won't be able to drive while under the influence of the sedative. A small needle will be inserted into a vein (usually in your arm), the medication administered, and your dentist/oral surgeon can then work while you relax.
Recovery: While you'll quickly regain wakefulness, the effects of the sedation may linger. You'll likely feel tired and should rest for the remainder of the day.
A Note: Finding the right dentist
Not all dentists offer IV sedation. For general dental procedures it is recommended that an anesthesiologist is providing the sedation as a dentist does not have the proper training for administering anesthesia and provide proper care for all types of possible complications. For surgical procedures, an oral surgeon has completed adequate training to provide anesthesia to patients safely.
Conquering your dental anxiety
If the thought of the dentist makes your heart race, don't let fear dictate your oral health. IV sedation may be the answer to comfortable, stress-free dental visits. Talk to your dentist about this option and see if it's the right fit for you.
